Every business that advertises online depends on someone else’s platform for targeting (Demand-Side Platforms (DSPs), Open Web Exchanges, and Private Marketplaces (PMPs)). The audience segments and tracking rules belong to that platform, and one policy update can change them overnight. A first-party data strategy gives small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) a customer foundation they own outright, one that keeps working whichever ad channel comes next.

TL;DR: First-party data is the customer information your business collects directly, and AI-driven channels like ChatGPT Ads now let advertisers target with it while cookie-based audiences grow less reliable. SMBs can start with the data already in their POS, CRM, and email tools, add a few low-cost collection tactics, and put that data to work in paid media.

Why Is First-Party Data Important For Advertising Right Now?

For years, advertisers leaned on third-party cookies to follow people across the web, and that signal has thinned out considerably. Safari, Firefox, and Brave already block third-party cookies by default, and although Google chose in April 2025 to keep them available in Chrome (but users can still turn them off in their privacy settings, according to Stape). Audiences built on borrowed tracking data now reach only part of the people they claim to cover.

ChatGPT Ads Rewards Brands That Bring Their Own Data

AI-driven ad platforms are building targeting around data advertisers supply themselves. Custom audience uploads first appeared in ChatGPT Ads Manager during a limited rollout in May 2026, PPC Land reported. In late September, LiveRamp expanded its partnership with OpenAI so marketers can activate CRM, loyalty, web, and app data as Custom Audiences, per Search Engine Journal.

What Is First-Party Data?

First-party data is any information a business collects directly from its own customers and audience. Common first-party data examples include:

  • Email addresses and phone numbers
  • Purchase history and order frequency
  • Website behavior, such as pages viewed and forms started
  • Loyalty program activity
  • Conversation data from chat widgets on your site

Information customers volunteer on purpose, like survey answers, is often called zero-party data. Both types belong to the business and stay put when an ad platform rewrites its rules.

Where Are SMBs Already Sitting On Unused Customer Data?

Most small businesses own more usable customer information than they realize. A point-of-sale system records what each customer bought and how often they return. Booking software stores names, contact details, and appointment history, while email platforms and CRMs track subscribers and every lead who has called or filled out a form.

Each of these tools hold one slice of the entire customer picture, but the tools rarely talk to each other. Exporting lists from every system into one clean, deduplicated file is often the most valuable first step a business can take.

How Can SMBs Collect First-Party Data Without A Big Budget?

A Simple Loyalty Program

A rewards program tied to a phone number or email address turns anonymous buyers into identifiable repeat customers. Many POS platforms include loyalty features at little or no added cost.

A Discount For Entering Your Email

Visitors share contact details more readily when they get something useful back, such as a first-order discount or early access to a sale.

Post-Purchase Surveys

Two or three questions after a purchase reveal why people chose you, what else they need, and how they found you. That last answer also strengthens campaign reporting, which ties into how our team approaches measuring foot traffic from an ad campaign.

How Should SMBs Use First-Party Data In Advertising?

Collected data only pays off once it shapes where ad dollars go. Research from Google and Boston Consulting Group found that brands using first-party data for key marketing functions achieved up to a 2.9X revenue uplift and a 1.5X increase in cost savings.

Build Lookalike Audiences

Uploading a list of your best customers lets ad platforms find new people who share their traits and behaviors, which gives campaigns a stronger starting point than a broad interest category.

Personalize Offers

Purchase history separates one-time buyers from monthly regulars. A lapsed customer can see a welcome-back offer while a regular hears about a new product.

Feed Better Targeting Into Paid Channels

Customer lists can be matched for targeting and suppression across programmatic display, connected TV, streaming audio, and ChatGPT Ads. Suppression alone saves budget by keeping recent buyers from seeing acquisition ads for something they already purchased. A programmatic media buying agency can manage that matching across every channel at once, and our guide to hiring a programmatic advertising agency covers what to look for in a partner.
